John Hoyer Updike (né le 18 mars 1932 à Shillington, en Pennsylvanie, mort le 27 janvier 2009 était un écrivain américain, principalement connu pour sa tétralogie sur Rabbit, et pour avoir reçu deux fois le prix Pulitzer.
Il a publié 22 romans et plus d'une douzaine de recueils de nouvelles, ainsi que de la poésie, des critiques littéraires et des livres pour enfants. Il dépeint principalement "l'Amérique des petites villes, protestante et bourgeoise", et accorde une importance récurrente au sexe, à la foi, à la mort et à leurs entrelacements.
Il a montré aussi sa connaissance approfondie de la peinture moderne américaine dans son roman publié en 2006 en français sous le titre Tu chercheras mon visage (Seek my face, USA, 2002) dans lequel il évoque les figures de Jackson Pollock ou d'Andy Warhol.
